Toll pricing in Germany is increasing

From December 1, 2023, the calculation of toll rates in Germany will evolve by integrating a tax based on CO2 emissions from vehicles and in particular from trucks. The latter follows Directive 2022/362 adopted by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union in February 2022. Taking into account this change and according to trucks classifications (weight, number of axles, etc.), some increases could reach 80%.

The objective of this directive is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the road transport market and to finance the development of the German rail network. However, these taxes will be applied based on the vehicle’s CO2 emissions. Thus, if the truck does not emit greenhouse gases, there will be no tax applied. Finally, all 27 EU countries will have to comply with this directive before March 25, 2024.

Although the final bill is still under discussion in the German Parliament, it is already possible to evaluate the emission class of your vehicle on this simulator.
