New tax increases on some Belgian highways

From January 1st 2024, part of Belgium’s motorways will get an increase of kilometric charging system.

Roads of Flanders, the region located in the north of Belgium, which is 686 km long will impose news taxes from the beginning of 2024. To calculate the amount charged per kilometre driven on toll roads, 3 factors are taken into account: the vehicle weight (MMA category), the region concerned and the Euro emission standard.

However, Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) will be exempt from this new tax on the entire Flemish network but still considered as EURO VI emission class in the two other Belgian regions, Brussels-Capital and Wallonia (Sofico).

It should also be noted that the ZEV must still keep their OBU (On-Board Unit) even on Flemish roads. Finally, these will be automatically updated (Negoroad box).
