New tachographs V2: what you need to know
As requested from the European Union, a new regulation on tachographs for road transport companies in EU countries will take place on 31 Decembre 2024. Tachograph rules are the same for all transport companies in the European Union.
The tachograph is a device installed in transport vehicles to record drivers’ driving times, breaks and rest periods. It ensures compliance with regulations on driving and rest times, guaranteeing road safety and the well-being of drivers.
By December 31, 2024, all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes equipped with analog or digital tachographs will have to be replaced by the new 2nd generation intelligent tachograph. The introduction of it had been phased since August 2023, in compliance with the specifications from the Mobility Package.
What’s new about the V2 tachograph?
Version 2, with its cutting-edge technology, offers several improvements over the 1st generation. It enhances safety and transparency in international transport operations. It incorporates new functions such as automatic registration of border crossings, vehicle position during loading/unloading, data exchange with control authorities thanks to the early remote sensing system, etc.
It is designed to offer better protection against fraud and enable more effective control by the competent authorities. Finally, it is important to note that authorities will be able to access tachograph data remotely, simplifying roadside checks and reducing inspection time.
In case of non-conformity
Penalties are not standardized, and each member state applies its own rules. However, the consequences of non-compliance can be serious. In Spain, for example, this can result in a fine of up to 2,001€. In France, penalties can go from a year’s imprisonment to 30,000€ fine, while in Italy fines can range from 866€ to €3,464€.
For carriers, it’s crucial to get ready for this change by equipping vehicles with the right tools and complying with current regulations. It is also essential to train drivers and encourage them to adopt data management practices that comply with the new requirements.
