DISCOVERING THE SEA MODAL SHIFT INCENTIVE IN ITALY

The Sea Modal Shift incentive, introduced by the Italian government, is an initiative aiming to promote the use of maritime transport over road transport. This program (formerly called Marebonus) will improve the efficiency of road transport companies and reduce road traffic and environmental impact.

How does the Sea Modal Shift Incentive work?

The Sea Modal Shift incentive is designed to encourage European transport companies to shift their freight from road to sea. The incentive is available to transport companies that use Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) and Ro-Pax (Roll-on/Roll-off Passenger) services. They involve the transportation of vehicles on ships, which can significantly reduce the number of trucks on the road. The financial support is calculated based on the distance that would have been traveled by road in Italy, with a contribution of 30-euro cents per kilometer avoided.

Benefits of the Sea Modal Shift

  • Environmental impact: by shifting freight from road to sea, the program helps to reduce carbon emissions
  • Economic efficiency: companies can benefit from lower transportation costs and reduced fuel consumption
  • Road safety: reducing the number of trucks on the road leads to fewer accidents and improved safety for drivers
  • Infrastructure longevity: less road traffic means lower maintenance costs

Which ports are concerned?

More than 20 Italian ports are concerned (including Sardinia and Sicily) as some Spanish (Sagunto, Barcellona and Valencia), Greek (Patrasso and Igoumenitsa), French (Corsica), Croatian (Split) and Maltese ports. The list is subject to change, please get back to us to receive the most updated list of ports concerned by this initiative.

Who is eligible?

European transport companies can apply for the incentive. The application process involves submitting documentation that proves the use of maritime transport and the corresponding reduction in road transport. The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport oversees the program, ensuring compliance with European Union. Italian transport companies can apply for it by themselves. For non-Italian transport companies, participation is only possible through an authorized consultant.
