NEW TOLLS PRICING IN GERMANY FOR VEHICLES OVER 3.5 TONS:
WHAT WILL CHANGE ON JULY 1, 2024

From July 1, 2024, Germany has introduced a new highway tolls pricing for vehicles over 3.5 tons, which were previously exempt.

Until now, only vehicles over 7.5 tons were charged. The aim of this measure is to optimize the financing and maintenance of road and rail infrastructures, and reduce congestion on freeways.

Who is concerned?

Trucks and HGVs over 3.5 tons will now have to pay tolls in Germany. This includes commercial vehicles and goods vehicles. However, there are exemptions for :

  • Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) – Class CO2 5 with an F1 weight < or equal to 4.25 tonnes will be fully exempt from the tax.
  • Commercial vehicles of craftsmen, artisans and similar professions (with 7.5-tonne vehicles)

The impact on transport companies is a priority. Carriers and companies in the sector will have to adapt to these changes in order to optimize their routes and logistics costs. However, many professionals agree that there is no other solution than to pass on the full impact to the customers.
